Shopify Product Bundle Builder

A theme-native build-your-own-bundle experience for Shopify Online Store 2.0.

Overview and context

A custom Online Store 2.0 bundle-building experience developed on top of Shopify's Dawn 11.0.0 theme. Customers assemble a fixed-size bundle, filter eligible items, review their selections, and add the whole configuration to the cart. Dawn itself is Shopify's open-source reference theme; the bundle template, section, and logic are my additions.

Problem

Standard Shopify product pages don't support build-your-own-kit shopping without an app or heavy customization.

My role and contribution

  • Created a dedicated product.bundle.json template and a custom main-bundle-product.liquid section.
  • Wired bundle size and eligible collections to merchant-editable metafields (custom.bundle_qty, custom.bundle_collections, custom.bundle_list).
  • Implemented filtering, duplicate prevention, maximum-selection enforcement, and a remove-and-replace flow.
  • Preserved selected product names as hidden line-item properties so the choices reach the cart and order.

Technical approach

  • Keep the experience inside the theme rather than depending on a third-party bundle app.
  • Let merchants configure bundles through metafields instead of code changes.
  • Give shoppers immediate feedback with a selection counter and a disabled Add to Cart state.
  • Responsive, bundle-specific styling with a Flickity carousel.

Evidence and outcomes

  • A working bundle template with validation, filtering, and cart persistence on Dawn 11.
