Founder-led venture

GrowGrid NL

Smart hydroponics connecting sensors, embedded devices, cloud services, and a web interface.

Conceptual illustration created for this case study — not a screenshot of the application.

Overview and context

GrowGrid NL is my own venture: an IoT-enabled smart hydroponics platform that brings embedded sensing, cloud services, data processing, and modern web applications together as one product rather than a collection of tools. I lead its technical direction and development.

Problem

Local growers need reliable visibility into growing conditions without assembling their own stack of sensors, dashboards, and scripts.

My role and contribution

  • Founded the initiative and lead technical strategy, solution evaluation, and project planning.
  • Designed the end-to-end software and data architecture: backend services, REST APIs, sensor-data pipelines, monitoring workflows, and user-facing interfaces.
  • Handle stakeholder engagement and translate research concepts and grower needs into practical implementation decisions.
  • Built technical demonstrations, workshop materials, and educational content explaining IoT, sensors, and automation to mixed audiences.

Technical approach

  • Sensor nodes on embedded hardware report growing conditions into a cloud-connected data pipeline.
  • Backend services expose that data through REST APIs consumed by monitoring workflows and web interfaces.
  • Architecture decisions weigh system reliability, data quality, scalability, and secure technology use.
  • AI-assisted research and documentation workflows support technical decision-making, with outputs reviewed before they inform implementation.

Evidence and outcomes

  • $5,000 in project funding secured through the NL Eats Food Forward Innovation Challenge.
  • Presented the platform through Memorial University entrepreneurship and innovation programs.
  • Development is ongoing; I continue to lead the product's technical direction.
